Receive a Video Call as a Patient

Patients can receive video calls initiated by a practitioner directly from the main page of the Patient Portal. The patient does not need to start the call. Once the practitioner initiates the call, the patient receives an incoming call notification.

Participating in a Video Call on the Patient Portal

Wait for the Practitioner to Call

Remain on the Patient Portal's main page. The practitioner is responsible for initiating the telemedicine call. After logging in, wait for practitioner's call on the Home Page.

Accept or Decline the Call

When the practitioner starts the call, an incoming call notification appears on the patient's screen. Select Accept to join the telemedicine session. If you do not want to join the call, select Decline.

Allow Camera and Microphone Access

When joining the call for the first time, your browser may ask for permission to use your camera and microphone.

Select Allow to give the telemedicine session access to your camera and microphone. The exact permission prompt and available options can vary depending on the browser, device, and existing site permissions. Modern browsers require user permission before a website can access camera or microphone input.

If access was previously granted for the site, the browser may not display the permission prompt again. Permissions can also be changed through the browser or device settings.

Note: The patient must allow the required camera and microphone permissions for the corresponding media to be available during the call.

Join the Telemedicine Call

After the required permissions have been granted, the patient enters the active telemedicine session. The practitioner and patient appear within the same video call.

Change Audio and Camera Devices

During the call, the patient can use the available device controls to select a different microphone, speaker, or camera when multiple devices are available.

For example, the available devices may include the computer's built-in microphone and speakers, as well as other connected devices.

The devices shown will depend on the hardware and permissions available on the patient's device.

Leave the Video Call

When the visit is finished, the patient can use the call controls to leave the telemedicine session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the patient start the video call?

No. The practitioner initiates the call. The patient waits for the incoming call and then chooses whether to accept or decline it.

What happens if I don't see the call?

Make sure you are on the EHR main page and that the telemedicine session is still active. If the practitioner has not initiated the call, there will not be an incoming call notification.

Why is my browser asking for camera and microphone permission?

Web browsers require permission before a website can access your camera or microphone. The exact prompt depends on the browser, device, and existing permissions.

Can I use a different microphone or camera?

Yes, when multiple compatible devices are available, you can select another available audio or camera device through the call controls.

What if I previously blocked camera or microphone access?

You may need to update the site's permissions in your browser settings before the camera or microphone can be used. For example, Chrome allows camera and microphone permissions to be changed through Site settings.
